Project Background

Durham County is creating a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Vision Plan to improve mobility and connections for Durham over the next 30 years. BRT is a high-quality, bus-based transit service that provides safe, reliable, and frequent transportation. BRT services can feature high-frequency service, dedicated bus lanes, enhanced passenger amenities, and advanced traffic prioritization technology. Visit the “What is BRT” section of the project website to see more amenities that make up a BRT service.

In Fall 2025, Durham County asked the public where Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) improvements should be made, and which improvements matter most. A summary is available in the Phase I Public Engagement Report on the project website (in the document library).

Based on this input, top priorities identified by the public included improved wait times, faster travel time, reliability, arrival updates, comfort, safety, and access. Using these priorities, the study team grouped potential bus upgrades into small, medium, and large improvements based on typical cost and how long they would take to implement. These are shown in the Bus Improvements graphic below.

Because not everything can happen at once, we’re asking what should come first and what matters most to you. Please review the graphic before answering this quick survey (4 questions about the Vision Plan and 7 about you) and share your preferences to help guide which projects are completed first in the county.

Thank you for taking part in shaping Durham County’s transit future!
